New Moon in Aries: Here Comes The Sun

New Moon in Aries: Here Comes The Sun

The Moon reached its peak of darkness for the month and joined the Sun at 4°21′ sidereal Aries today just before noon Pacific time. This begins the Aries cycle, where we will really feel the planets fueling our strength forward in new endeavors and our spirit into illuminated heights. Sun is exalted here, and Aries, the Ram, is ruled by Mars, a fire planet that brings us strength and courage. It is the first in the sequence of the 12 zodiac signs, or Vedic Rashis, representing all kinds of initiations and beginnings. The Vedic zodiac is further divided into 27 divisions or nakshatras, and this new moon in early Aries falls in the first nakshatra of the 27–Ashwini, the horse woman (often thought of as the twin horses). The new moon is generally a good time for starting anything new, laying foundations, or planting seeds, and this Aries new moon is especially potent for that with the added strength of Mars’ courage, Sun’s exalted capacity, and Ashwini’s horsepower.

IMG_0705As Aries is the first sign in the zodiac, it also relates to the head and brain. We can actually see the origin of the symbol for Aries (as well as the other zodiac signs) by looking at the human body. In the cross-section of the brain above and the images below, you can see the symbol for the horns clearly reflected in the limbic system of the brain, as well as the third ventricle and the brain as a whole. The third ventricle, which surrounds the thalamus, is known as the “Cave of Brahma” in Kriya yoga, and it is from here that a lot of our human consciousness, experience, and sense of spirit emanate. Within the symmetry of the ventricle, the right and left brains, and right and left thalamus, we can perceive the masculine and feminine, or solar and lunar channels of energy within our bodies and in the gpineal-gland-thalamus-hypothalamus-pituitary-gland-pons-medullaross scale of creation. In this area we also find the hypothalamus, the pituitary and pineal glands. The whole region and its nerve bundles comprise the “third eye,” where spiritual awakening is thought possible, through circulation and purification, activated by meditation.

The deities for Ashwini are the Ashwin Kumars, or divine twin physicians. They bring to this star the power to heal and channel healing energy especially through prayer and spiritual practice. The twin essence of this star is reflected in the symmetrical visual of the brain and the Cave of Brahma symbolism. Brahma, the energy of creation, is also related to this star. The twin physicians were born to the Sun’s wife while she was in the form of a horse. The horsepower behind this star brings magnificent speed and energy for beginning things (just as we see race-horses bursting forth out of the starting gate), but does not necessarily give the stamina to see things through to completion. It is important to choose where you let your energy begin running wild this moon cycle, and channel it towards those endeavors where you will have other (planetary) energies supporting you through as you continue them.

New moon here brings confidence as well as strength, with Mars joining the Sun and Moon in Aries. Mars is the fuel for the fire in our gut, and in its own masculine expression sign, we are able to channel our physical strength, will and courage into our activities. Mercury also joins this trinity today and for the next week or so, but may not be able to take the heat of Sun and Mars as easily. Watch that your words do not become too hot, forceful, or controlling. Instead try to bring forth the Sun’s higher wisdom and practice communicating from the brightness of the spirit, with your higher purpose in mind. This can be brought forth through spiritual practice including serviceful actions, and by purifying one’s body and mind. This is a great time for a springtime cleanse or fast, as well as kicking off a new exercise routine. Great healing and awakening is possible at this time through our efforts to allow the light within us to shine forth and into the world around us.

Powerful Solar Eclipse in Pisces on the New Moon and Vernal Equinox: March 20, 2015

Powerful Solar Eclipse in Pisces on the New Moon and Vernal Equinox: March 20, 2015

Friday brings the convergence of Sun, Moon, Ketu (the South Node), and Mars in Pisces for a full Solar Eclipse, and hosts a potent batch of astrological beginnings. It is the vernal equinox, when daylight equals nighttime hours, and all life starts a growth spurt under the increasing sunlight and warmth as springtime blossoms. It is also a New Moon, and each new moon is also the beginning of a cycle where we will process the energies related to a certain zodiac sign (Vedic Rashi). This particular new Moon also initiates the first month of the Vedic lunar calendar, Chaitra, hence it is like the first day of the new year in this calendar. Eclipses are powerful times for transformation, and yoked with this assemblage of transformative energies, we can anticipate some major upheavals (especially in northern Africa, Europe, and northeast Russia, where the eclipse will occur) . As we are approaching the eclipse it is likely that we’ve been feeling these forces already.

This eclipse and New Moon are occurring in early sidereal Pisces, in the nakshatra Uttara Bhadrapada, at 2:36 am Pacific time on March 20th. Pisces is a dual or mutable water sign, ruled by Jupiter. Emotions run deep in Pisces, and even deeper under the star Uttara Bhadrapada, which is ruled by the celestial serpent, Ahirbudhnya. Serpent energy is related to Kundalini and other deeply hidden emotional waters. We can expect some of these to rise to the surface around this Eclipse. Uttara Bhadrapada relates to the funeral cot and the process we go through after dying, so it is possible to experience a reawakening through this eclipse, if we allow the death of what no longer serves.

Eclipses in general are able to reveal a lot of energies that are otherwise subconscious or buried. Ketu, the South Node, relates to karma that we have done a lot of work with in the past (in past lives and childhood), and have gained some wisdom with, but are still finishing the process. Whichever themes Ketu represents in your chart, you may be experiencing these potently at this time. You will also be working with the house energies of whichever house Pisces is in your chart.

KetuDuring the solar eclipse, the Sun’s light is literally being blocked out by the shadow graha Ketu, so it can feel very disconcerting. (Though it is the Moon that crosses in front of the Sun, it is actually passing over the spot in the sky where Ketu is located, thus the shadow graha emerges.) Subconscious fears arise and seem to swallow our brilliant life-force. Your inner disapproving parent may be coming out now, and perhaps explosively, with Mars conjoining this eclipse. The Pisces energy may compel us to try to hide from these forces, by escapism into drugs, alcohol, or television. If this need for isolation is felt, offer yourself the chance to grow through it constructively by practicing meditation, journaling, or examining your dreams. Take special care to be gentle in your interactions with others, as latent grievances may be coming up with a lot of charge.

If we apply ourselves to the opportunity of inner work around this eclipse, great transformation is possible. Ketu may have harnessed certain convictions into our being that may no longer be serving us, and this is a good time to uproot them (we may not have a choice). Take time with a journal and write down your values and goals, and what things are holding you back that you need to let go of. Now is a very powerful time for kundalini awakening and movement. Saturn rules both Anuradha, where it began its retrograde course on Saturday, and Uttara Bhadrapada. Both nakshatras are related to kundalini, and Saturn’s retrograde motion in Scorpio is giving us the opportunity to dive deeper into our commitment to transformation.

eclipse-march-20th-chartThe benefic planets are also influencing this eclipse, so there may be a certain grace aiding us along even amidst the disturbance. Pisces’ ruler Jupiter is aspecting this eclipse from its retrograde position in Cancer, shining its bounty of wisdom towards the shadowed cluster. It is also aspecting retrograde Saturn, offering a grounding philosophy towards the eclipse nakshatra’s ruler. Look to your teachers and philosophies to help anchor yourself in a supportive cradle through this process. Mercury and Venus are surrounding the eclipse on either side, in Aquarius and Aries, respectively. You may begin to process the emotional churning with the intellect, and finish it with a stronger desire to compromise and see everyone’s happiness improved.

Take good care of your nervous system during this time. The high emotional intensity of Pisces and Uttara Bhadrapada, coupled with the added heat and potential aggravation of Mars, could lead to an overload of stress as limiting beliefs are being broken down. Honor yourself with alone time to work with everything that is coming to the surface. Apply soothing oils and bathe frequently during this time if possible. As we begin this Pisces moon cycle and the new lunar year, with the added force of the Uttara Bhadrapada eclipse, set your intentions for what type of emotional cleansing and rebirthing you need, and how you want to see yourself emerge into this new cycle. The hours surrounding the peak of the eclipse are a powerful time for spiritual practice, especially if you are on the side of the planet where the eclipse’s shadow is visible.

New Moon in Aquarius in Dhanishta

New Moon in Aquarius in Dhanishta

The New Moon occurs today (February 18th) at 3:47pm Pacific time, beginning the sidereal Aquarius cycle in the nakshatra Dhanishta. Aquarius, or Kumbha, “the pitcher,” is a fixed air sign ruled by Saturn, so this cycle may bring some big ideas to the forefront that we hope to implement through action. Aquarius is a place where the individual is less emphasized, (opposite Leo, where the full moon will happen), so these ideas and goals may apply more to the broader picture. This includes our society and communities, so it’s a good time for service. Individual self-esteem could be lower right now, but allow yourself to recognize the call to duty and see the value you bring to your community through your selfless actions. Saturn brings the opportunity for discipline, so it is also a great time to add more to your spiritual practice, including breath-work or pranayama. According to the Vedic texts, Kumbha can be seen as a man holding a pot, with deep-brown skin, standing in the water. We can see the associated imagery of this Aquarius principle in the sadhus of India (and its biggest ritual pilgrimage day, the Kumbha Mela), who make their lives an offering of service to society through their prayers and Saturnian austerities, while renouncing the individual self.

Dhanishta, ruled by Mars, is the star of wealth. Its deities are the eight Vasus, which refer to the elements making up the earth and cosmos. It is related to music and arts. Its Mars rulership puts some power behind this star, so we may take great strides towards an alchemical blending of these elements to reach our goals this cycle. It’s a good time for magic! We may be working on ideas to help increase wealth this moon cycle, especially inventive endeavors that benefit the many. Though we may feel the disciplining and discerning force of Saturn, Mars and Venus will be joined in Pisces for a few weeks, which could cause some of our energy to get lost or diverted to the dream realm. Try to apply this through meditation and conscious visualization practices. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which can cause us to overemphasize our desires and fantasies, especially with the aspect from its retrograde ruler, Jupiter. Try to bring some of that dream-realm material into your artistic and community service endeavors through consciously-applied action and discipline. With the critical influence of Ketu, and the tight conjunction of Mars and Venus this week, be gentle with your relationships and partners. Consider doing quiet spiritual practices together. If you’re feeling any strain on personal power this moon, love and honor yourself by reflecting on the universal power you engage through your service to others, including through your prayers.

Happy Shivaratri! New Moon in Aquarius

Happy Shivaratri! New Moon in Aquarius

Tonight is Maha Shivaratri, or the Great Night of Shiva. It is the celebration of the day of Lord Shiva and Parvati’s wedding, representing the unification of Shiva and Shakti, or the masculine and feminine forces of divine consciousness and energy. We celebrate each Shivaratri on the fourteenth night of the waning moon, while Maha Shivaratri falls on this night during the lunar month Magha.

This moon phase begins during the night on Monday, February 16th, 2015 in North America and continues through until the evening of the 17th (when the New Moon phase begins). In Hindu tradition, this night is highly auspicious for performing spiritual practices and penance in order to accrue grace and swifter spiritual gain. It is said that a boon (wish) from Lord Shiva may be granted to one who undergoes penance with devotion.

Shiva_BangaloreFasting and staying up all night are typical practices, along with yoga, chanting, meditation, and prayer. The panchakshara or five-syllabled mantra, “Om Namah Shivaya,” is particularly auspicious to chant on this day. It beckons forth divine love and the emergence of our higher self. In the Hindu trinity, Shiva is the destructive or transformative aspect of the divine, aiding in the destruction of our ego and the accompanying hindrances that do not serve us. This allows a rebirth into higher consciousness.

Shiva is known as the greatest of yogis, who sits on a mountain top in meditation with equanimity for all creation, for aeons without disturbance. In the stories, he had retreated to Mount Kailash and renounced the world after the death of his first wife, Sati. The other gods eventually required Shiva to leave his meditation, however, in order to marry again and produce a son that could destroy a powerful demon who was terrorizing the three worlds.

604px-Kama_ShivaParvati was born for this purpose (a reincarnation of Sati), and was naturally attracted to the meditative Shiva. She went to serve him while he was in his deep meditation, and grew to love him, even though her less devoted friends were turned off by his rough appearance. For a long time he seemed not to notice her, and thus Kamadeva, the God of Love, was sent to fire a love arrow at Shiva. Though this startled him and awakened him from his trance, he soon realized the scheme, destroyed Kamadeva and sent Parvati away. Her love for him did not diminish, however, and she prayed for a path that would lead him to accept her.

The sage Narada, who was in on the gods’ plan, told Parvati that Shiva could not be won by charm and beauty, but only by spiritual practice and austerity. Propelled by her love for Shiva, Parvati took up the life of an ascetic and left her father’s palace to live in the dirt on the forest floor, forgoing food, water, and luxuries while meditating on her lord. The force of love in her heart compelled a devotion that allowed her to burn away all fears and impurities through her meditation, and she became one of the most powerful yoginis.

Finally, having compassion for her and the three worlds (who were awaiting his heir to prevent their destruction), Shiva went to see Parvati in disguise in order to test her devotion. He asked her why she was performing such penance, and she replied that it was all for the deep love of her lord. He questioned why she would want to marry someone like Shiva who was crude and without riches, who carried skulls and associated with a wild crowd. She allowed the passion of her heart to rise and defended her lord, telling the man that Shiva was the greatest god and yogi and that only someone with a lower mind would not understand him.

6_Śiva_and_Pārvatī_seated_on_a_terrace._1800_(circa)_BMFor the strength of her devotion, Shiva granted Parvati a boon and finally accepted her as his wife, and the worlds rejoiced. The complementary forces of Shiva and Shakti, masculine and feminine, divine father and mother, were finally able to unite and propel the dance of creation needed for all to be in balance. This is why on Maha Shivaratri, we celebrate and call upon the merging of these two halves, consciousness and energy, through penance and austerity. It is a great time to fast and refrain from indulging any of the five senses.

On this Shivaratri, Venus and Mars are tightly conjunct and joining Ketu in Pisces. Though Venus is exalted in Pisces and this could raise passion levels, it could also create confusion or a disturbance in relationships, and stir up overwhelming emotions including fear and feelings of isolation. Ketu’s influence brings a critical eye, and Venus and Mars are receiving an aspect from Pisces’ ruler, retrograde Jupiter, so this placement could cause us to temporarily retreat from Mars-Venus interactions. Moon and Mercury are also tightly conjunct, with a close aspect from Saturn and a wider aspect from retrograde Jupiter. This could bring an analytical influence to our emotional body and processing, but also a strong feeling of pressure (Saturn), and an evolving philosophy in regards to our emotions today.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17th, begins the new moon phase (Amavasya), with the moment of new moon at 3:47pm Pacific time on Wednesday, the 18th. This new moon will occur with Sun and Moon in sidereal Aquarius in the nakshatra Dhanishta. Aquarius is a fixed air sign ruled by Saturn, so this cycle may bring some big ideas to the forefront that we hope to implement through action, perhaps continuing the Capricorn-cycle-driven urge to add structure to our lives. Aquarius is a place where the individual is less emphasized (opposite Leo, where the full moon will happen), so these ideas will apply more to our society and community, and acts of service are likely. Saturn brings the opportunity for discipline, so it could be a great time to add more to your spiritual practice, including some breath-work or pranayama.

Dhanishta, ruled by Mars, is the star of wealth. Its deities are the eight Vasus, which refer to the elements making up the earth and cosmos, and it is related to music and arts. We may be working on ideas to help increase wealth this moon cycle, especially creative endeavors that benefit the many. Though we may feel the disciplining and discerning force of Saturn, Mars and Venus will be joined in Pisces for a few weeks, which could cause some of our energy to get lost or diverted to the dream realm. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which can cause us to overemphasize our desires and fantasies, especially with the aspect from its retrograde ruler, Jupiter. With the critical influence of Ketu, be gentle with your relationships and partners. We may, however, get the chance to bring some of that dream-realm material into our artistic and community service endeavors with consciously-applied action and discipline.

Happy Maha Shivaratri, Hara Hara Mahadev!
